About My Practice
Queer- Friendly & Trauma Informed Care
I work with individuals of ages 18 and above in individual settings. I hold a trauma-informed lens in my practice where my primary focus in my practice is to create safety for my client. I place the individual in a broader, socio-cultural and political context, guided by the belief that our lives and experiences are heavily influenced by the socio-political systems and institutions surrounding us, and that their influence cannot be ignored. I am queer-friendly and take a social-justice stance, as I believe that therapy is political in nature, and I invite my clients to bring their social identities into session as well (as and how they are safe and comfortable to do so).
Modalities and Approaches
For my practice, I borrow elements from certain theoretical frameworks, such as internal family systems, narrative therapy, and relational approaches. I believe that instead of “fixing” or “shaming” the uncomfortable parts of us, we should actively approach them and understand the intention that created them in the first place, and change the lens with which we view them. I understand that this can sound confusing and overwhelming, so I delicately pace-out the comfort-approach see-saw.
Process-Oriented Approach
I also take a process-oriented approach in my practice, which means that I believe that just the very presence of a therapist-client relationship can have a significant impact, and I focus on what comes up during the very process of therapy. The Story Behind The Name
I’ve had blue-hair throughout most of my under-graduation and my post-graduation. It has become a big part of my identity, and my personal favorite feature of myself. But before I started practicing, I asked myself: “Is blue hair unprofessional?”
As psychologists, we bring in our authentic selves to the therapy space. We also encourage clients to be authentic and to explore their identities and be their authentic selves (in both sessions and beyond). We also try to engage in adaptive behaviors the client can model outside therapy as well. As GenZ, we are questioning and re-defining the rigid and stereotypical notions “professionalism.”
The therapeutic space is relational, and both the therapist and the client actively participate (just in different forms). How can I encourage authenticity and the bringing in of one’s true identity in session when I myself am holding back? As the new generation of psychologists, we are also challenging the rigid, textbook notions of a therapist and of therapy.
The Blue-Haired Therapist is about being authentic to your identity, and to challenge rigid notions of therapy, therapists, and overall professionalism.
I encourage the breaking of stereotypes, and exploring individual personhood, all parts of it
